On page SEO – what is it, and where to use it?
Any website expert knows that there are two types of SEO – on page and off page. Off page SEO refers to getting links from other websites, how long people spend on the page, social media, and other Google ranking factors. On page SEO, on the other hand, focuses on the page itself. It consists of all the ways that you’ll make a certain page or blog post a top-ranking Google search.
Here’s exactly how to use on page SEO.
Find a keyword
Firstly, you will need to find at least one keyword (a phrase that you can mention multiple times in your post) that your target audience are searching for in Google. You can use a tool like Keysearch to do this. For example, you might have a plumbing company in Swindon. For this business ‘plumber in Swindon’, ‘plumbers Swindon’ and ‘plumbing company Swindon’ are all good keywords; you can test these in Keysearch and see the data (how many people are searching for it and how difficult it is to rank) and find other suggested keywords. You may end up with 5-10 keywords, but you should have one main one.
Sprinkle your main keyword everywhere
You should include your main keyword in the following places:
– the slug (the end of the URL), provided the page you are working on is not the homepage.
– the title of the page.
– at least one subheading (you may want to include other keywords in the other subheadings).
– in the text, around 1 time per 500 words on the page.
– in a few image descriptions.
Add your secondary keywords
Add your secondary keywords in at least once in the text. You could also add them in headings and image descriptions. Make sure that there are no images without a description.
Ensure that the text still looks natural
Keywords are important, but Google still favours natural-looking text. Don’t keyword stuff your writing, make sure that the keywords appear naturally, and that the page gives the reader the information that they require. Remember that while Google needs to be able to read your page to rank, it’s even more important that potential customers have a good user experience as well!
